Jian Liu is a Principal Scientist and External Lead in the Discovery Chemistry Department at Merck.
As a talent and leadership advisor, she specializes in advising and serving boardroom and C-Suite clients within Fortune 500 companies as well as those financially sponsored by leading private equity firms and for owner-founder led companies.
He has more than 18 years of experience in drug discovery and has managed projects on target validation, lead identification, and lead optimization. His research generated multiple clinical drug candidates which went into first-in-man, phase I, and phase II clinical trials. Dr. Liu is an expert in drug discovery in many therapeutic areas such as osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, oncology, pain, neuro-degenerative diseases, and infectious diseases, particularly HIV. At Merck, which he joined in 2001, Dr. Liu is also in charge of outsourcing and collaborating with several external Contract Research Organizations. Dr. Liu has published 31 peer reviewed papers, as well as filed and obtained over 50 US and international patents as an inventor.
He obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Liu has been a Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SAPA) executive council member and was elected the SAPA president in 2016. The non-profit group facilitates collaboration between pharmaceutical companies in the US and China. With the assistance of SAPA, a significant number of Chinese pharmaceutical companies have established subsidiaries in New Jersey, Boston and Maryland, creating many jobs and increasing tax income to these locations.
