Cathy M. Cheng
Co-Founder / Principal,C & M First Services, Inc.
Cathy was born and raised in Mainland China. In 1981, she received a scholarship from the College of Insurance, (now Insurance Risk Management Program of St. Johns University), becoming first student from People Republic of China ever admitted to this school. Thus started her life long passion for insurance. She graduated from the College of Insurance with honors and was the first student from People’s Republic of China ever awarded a MBA degree in Insurance Management. Afterwards, she worked for China America Insurance Company, a joint venture company between American International Group and the People‘s Insurance Company of China. She then worked for Johnson & Higgins (now Marsh & McLennan) handling multi-national accounts.
With China‘s open door policy in early 1990’s, an influx of Chinese companies came to the U.S exploring this new business territory. Cathy realized these newcomers needed someone who not only speaks their language and understands their culture but more importantly can provide them with professional insurance guidance in doing business in this new business environment. She co-founded the insurance brokerage firm C&M First Service, Inc. to serve the insurance needs of these Chinese companies. Today, C&M has become one of the largest and the most recognized insurance brokerage companies in Asian community in the US.
In addition to her professional achievements, Cathy has a strong passion for the Chinese language and culture and wants the 2nd generation of Chinese born in the US to be able to experience it. With that mission in mind, Cathy formed Huaxia Chinese School in Westchester County with a few other mothers. Huaxia Chinese School recently just celebrated its 20th successful year.
