Balakrishnan G. Iyer
Co-Founder & Chief Growth Officer, Utopus Insights
Balakrishnan G. Iyer (Balki) is Co-founder and Chief Growth Officer of Utopus Insights, responsible for revenue by leading all sales and business development activities for the company, which provides analytical solutions to orchestrate a renewable, sustainable future. He is also Director of Iyer Educational Institutions (IEI), which he co-founded with his wife. IEI is an organization comprising a Montessori school, a special education school for children with autism, technology platform and a teacher preparation institute. The aim of IEI, whose employees are 95 percent female, is to provide an inclusive education for children with special needs.
Mr. Iyer is passionate about the role of clean energy, and Utopus is now part of broader renewable solutions after being recently acquired by Vestas, a global leader in wind energy. Prior to this, he served as Chief Operating Officer of Enel Green Power. He was responsible for developing, building and operating renewable power projects, including several wind and solar plants to light up millions of homes in India. Mr. Iyer also co-founded a distributed solar business (later acquired by Statkraft) to help mitigate usage of high carbon diesel generators. His prior roles have included leading business development for General Electric in New York. He sat on the Executive Board for GE’s Asia Pacific American Forum, a diversity group focused on Asian American talent and expanding into Asian markets.
Mr. Iyer is Six Sigma Black Belt certified and is a graduate of the GE’s prestigious Management Leadership Program. He attended the Birla Institute of Technology and Science for Joint Undergraduate and has Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Science; holds a Master’s in Systems Science & Industrial Engineering from Binghamton University, NY, and an MBA from New York University’s Stern school of business. He and his wife Svetlana have two daughters.
