In 1972 Suchot Paleewong emigrated from Bangkok, Thailand to New York City with the goal of expanding his charter flight business, and to seek other opportunities in the land of opportunity. He soon founded Siam Grocery in the Upper West Side (Broadway at 106-107 St.), the first Thai grocery store importing native ingredients, canned food items, rice, chili sauces, household appliances, and beverages from his homeland. He also continued selling airline tickets to Thailand out of that location. Essentially Siam Grocery became the center for all things Thai, including a budding Thai community.
