D&I Strategic Alignment, Global Diversity, Inclusion && Community Engagement Group, McDonald’s Corporation
Sharmila Fowler is Director, D&I Strategic Alignment for the Global Diversity, Inclusion, & Community Engagement Group at McDonald’s. In this role, she is developing the global diversity framework, providing D&I insights and analysis for business alignment and impact, and promoting thought diversity leadership both internally and externally. Previously, she served as Marketing Director, Asian Consumer Market where she led the Asian American marketing activities for McDonald’s U.S., utilizing in-culture and in-language insights to connect to these consumers in a culturally relevant manner.
Ms. Fowler has over 18 years of experience in multicultural consumer marketing and has worked with leading Fortune 500 companies, ethnic advertising agencies and ethnic media firms in the areas of market research and strategy development. Her work includes a report on Asian Americans and the Food Industry for Promar Consulting in 2000, “The State of the Asian American Consumer” for Nielsen in 2012, and “The Asian American Market Report” for Phoenix Multicultural published in both 2005 and 2008. The inaugural edition of the report for Phoenix received the “Market Research Firm of the Year in Asian American Research” Award by the Asian American Advertising Federation.
Ms. Fowler sits on the Board of the Asian Pacific Middle Eastern Network Oak Brook Chapter and is McDonald’s Company Leader for LeanIn.org. In addition, she serves on Nielsen’s Asian External Advisory Council and on the National Board of Ascend. She has taught a course on International Management as an adjunct professor at North Central College. She holds an MBA in Marketing/Strategic Planning from The Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Computer Science/Math from The University of Rochester. She is a resident of Chicago.
