Dinesh N. Melwani is currently a partner at Bookoff McAndrews PLLC (http://bookoffmcandrews.com/), a Washington DC Intellectual Property law firm. Mr. Melwani serves on the management team and helps lead the firm’s business development, diversity, and recruiting efforts. In just over three years, Bookoff McAndrews has grown from a small handful of attorneys to 18 attorneys and a total staff of 34 individuals.




Mr. Melwani’s practice includes global patent portfolio management, licensing, IP due diligence investigations to support investment and merger activity, and contentious proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His clients include universities, U.S. corporations ranging from startups to Fortune 100 companies, as well as numerous companies in countries across the world. These clients span a diverse range of technologies, including, e.g., medical devices, semiconductors, e-commerce and advertising, social media, heavy machinery, wearable technology, home automation and power management, networking and telecommunications, data analytics, and biotechnology. Mr. Melwani has been recognized as a “U.S. Life Science Star” for patent strategy, management, and prosecution by LMG Life Sciences 2014 and 2015. In addition, he has been (and will be) recognized by Super Lawyers for intellectual property in 2015 and 2016. He also served as a 2015 Fellow at the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity.



Mr. Melwani started his career as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. There, he examined U.S. and international patent applications in various technologies, including closure fasteners for vehicle compartments, sealing devices for engine fluids, and business methods. Prior to joining Bookoff McAndrews, PLLC, Mr. Melwani practiced law for many years at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner LLP, a large intellectual property law firm in Washington, DC. In addition, Mr. Melwani has served as an adjunct professor of Patent Law at the Howard University School of Law. He currently serves on the faculty of Patent Institute of Training.



Mr. Melwani is frequently invited to speak on ways companies can maximize the value of their patent portfolios. In addition, he has authored dozens of articles that have appeared in various industry periodicals, including Intellectual Property Today, Law360, MX Magazine, The Rose Sheet, and Mechanical Engineering Magazine.
